Ficus carica (Fig Tree)

Fig Tree - photo by Stephen Gatt

This medium sized tree rarely exceeds a height of 10m. It sheds its leaves in winter and its minute flowers are enclosed within the fruit (fig). The fig has a tiny pore at its base from which a wasp belonging to the genus Blastophaga enters in order to pollinate it.

Several varieties exist. The shape and colour of the fruit vary as well. They may be spherical or slightly elongated, pale green, yellow, black, dark purple or a mixture of these colours. The fig tree can be found growing on maquis ground, in disturbed habitats, as well as on cliffs and bastions. Common.
